THE FASHION DRAPE
The whole not wearing your coat while still totally wearing your coat trend started off so innocently. At first, this was simply the go-to move of the street style elite at fashion week, a way to showcase your outfit while still letting everyone know you’re fancy enough that you never actually need to use your arms. But it’s since become de rigeur for any celeb donning an outer layer.
THE ONE-SHOULDERED DRAPE
The trend quickly snowballed from there, reaching new heights of non-wearability, such as the single shoulder drape seen here on Kate Bosworth, striking that perfect balance between nonchalance and perpetual fear of dropping your blazer in a puddle.
ONE-SHOULDER SLUMP
And this year, not wearing your coat has evolved into an effortlessly impractical art form, with every young “It Girl” technically wearing their jackets, but slumping them off one shoulder so as to better flaunt their underlying ensemble.
THE ONE-SHOULDER WAIST CINCH
While this may bear a striking resemblance to Hailey’s one-shoulder slump, in fact, Gigi Hidid is innovating off of that aesthetic, attempting to wriggle free of her outerwear while simultaneously keeping the jacket firmly fastened to her torso with the aid of a wide black and white striped belt.
OFF-THE-SHOULDER DENIM
Considering this look desperately depends on those two fastened buttons and a healthy dose of boob tape to hold it in place, we’re going to go ahead and count this as a pioneering new way to wear your Good American denim, while truly not really wearing it at all.
TWO-SHOULDER SLUMP
From there, it was only a matter of time before the jacket got slumped off of both shoulders, and who better to be at the forefront of this anti-outerwear trend then the ANTI singer herself, Rihanna.
THE FOREARM BIND
Which brings us to the present, where the only acceptable way to wear your jacket is lashed around your forearms. But all that being said, we can’t wait to see which celeb will be bold enough to trailblaze this trend into the future, wearing a coat that delicately dangles from their wrists, wafting out behind them like their own personal parachute.
